What is the Feed-in Tariff Program?
The Feed-In Tariff Program was developed to encourage and promote greater use of renewable energy sources including on-shore wind, waterpower, renewable biomass, biogas, landfill gas and solar photovoltaic (PV) for electricity generating projects in Ontario. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) administers the Feed-in Tariff Program.
There are two main components to the Feed-in Tariff Program:
- microFIT Program – The microFIT Program is open to projects with a rated electricity generating capacity of 10 kilowatts (kW) or less.
On December 1, 2017, the microFIT Program reached the 50 MW Annual Procurement Target allocated for 2017. As a result, the IESO will not accept any further applications under the microFIT Program. The application window for the microFIT Program has officially closed.
- FIT Program – The FIT Program is open to projects with a rated electricity generating capacity greater than 10 kilowatts (kW) and generally up to 500 kW.
In accordance with the directive issued on December 1, 2016, by the Minister of Energy, 2016 marked the final FIT application period. As a result, the IESO will not be accepting any further applications under the FIT Program.
